Evergy crews restore 70% of outages after storm hits region
117,000 customers lost power

Kansas City, MO – August 1, 2024 – Evergy crews have restored power to nearly 70% of the 117,000 customers who lost power during Wednesday night’s storms. As of 8:00 a.m., about 29,000 customers remain without power.

Strong storms with winds reported as high as 80 miles per hour rolled through Kansas into Missouri. The winds caused the most significant damage in Salina, Topeka, Lawrence, and Kansas City metro areas.

This morning, Evergy will have about 1,100 personnel working to clear trees and restore power, and we have called on our neighboring utilities for mutual assistance crews. Once we know more about the additional crews we may bring in and assessment teams can survey the damage, we will provide an estimate for getting power back on. While line crews are restoring power, other teams are canvassing storm struck areas to assess damage, which makes power restoration more efficient.

People should prioritize safety. Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and assume that any downed line is still energized. Report it right away online at http://www.evergy.com/powerlinesafety. Call 911 in an emergency.

Evergy prioritizes outages to first restore service to public safety facilities and then based on restoring power to the most customers, which means repairing main lines and then focusing work based on the number of customers affected by individual outages.  These teams help ensure vegetation and line crews arrive equipped with what’s needed for local repairs.

People can report an outage and follow outage updates by downloading the Evergy mobile app: https://www.evergy.com/about-evergy/mobile-app or visit the outage map online: https://outagemap.evergy.com/
