  • Evergy Missouri West rates among the lowest nationwide compared with similar utilities
  • Anticipated annual revenue from data centers reduces rate request by $61 million

Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 3, 2026 – Today, Evergy Missouri West asked the Missouri Public Service Commission to review investments made in new generation, power grid improvements and other costs of serving Evergy Missouri West customers as part of its request to update rates. The request is reduced by $61 million based on anticipated annual revenue from data centers.

If approved, an average residential customer using 1,005 kilowatt-hours per month would see an increase of approximately $17.25.

“Evergy Missouri West customers have the lowest rates of all our customers and some of the lowest in the Midwest and the nation,” said David Campbell, Evergy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The investments included in this request will add new power plants and strengthen the system serving our Missouri West customers. At the same time, revenue from new data centers is helping reduce the amount we are requesting.”

Evergy Missouri West maintains a strong rate position
Evergy Missouri West electric rates are lower than 85% of the utilities in the U.S., according to Federal Energy Information Administration data. Over the past decade, from 2017 through 2026, Evergy customers have seen some of the lowest increases in the United States.

Over the last nine years, residential customer electricity prices in neighboring Midwestern states have increased 30%, while inflation has increased 33%. During the same period, Evergy Missouri West residential rates increased approximately 9%, or approximately 1% on average annually.

The Evergy Missouri West service area serves more than 340,000 customers and includes St. Joseph, Liberty, Platte City, Harrisonville, and Warrensburg, among other cities. Most customers in the Kansas City metropolitan area are served by Evergy Missouri Metro and are not affected by this request.

Customers can confirm their service area on their Evergy bill or online account.

New power plants, grid investments support reliability
The request includes recovery of costs associated with new power generation investments. The Missouri Public Service Commission (MPSC) reviews and approves new power plants before Evergy starts to build them or recover any associated costs. The Foxtrot Energy Center and Sunflower Sky Energy Center are expected to begin serving Evergy Missouri West customers in spring 2027, together providing 172 megawatts of solar power, which will produce enough electricity to power about 34,000 homes.

Evergy is also seeking recovery of construction costs for new natural gas generation plants that are scheduled to begin serving customers in 2029, 2030 and 2032. Together, the plants will provide 1,065 MW of natural gas generation for Missouri West customers. Recovering construction costs now lowers overall customer costs, as it reduces financing costs that otherwise accumulate interest during construction. These proposed investments must be approved by the MPSC before any costs are recovered.

For years, purchasing power from the regional energy market was the most cost-effective way for Evergy to serve its customers in this area. As market conditions have changed, investing in Evergy-owned generation now provides a more reliable and cost-effective way to serve its customers.  “As the regional energy market evolves, these power plant investments will provide reliable electricity while supporting price stability for our Evergy Missouri West customers,” Campbell said. “These solar and natural gas generation facilities provide complementary resources to meet customers’ needs efficiently.”

Since its last rate case in 2024, Evergy has also invested more than $650 million in electric grid infrastructure, including advanced technology and replacement of aging equipment. Evergy achieved its best year for reliability in 2025, with companywide customer outage minutes down 18% over the previous four years.

Data center revenue reduced request by $61 million
Evergy Missouri West serves two large data centers under rates established for large customers requiring 75 MW or more of electricity. Expected annual revenue from large data centers reduced Evergy’s rate request by $61 million.

Those large customer rates include key provisions designed to protect other Evergy customers:

  • Large data center customers pay a premium compared to other large energy users.
  • Large data center customers using 75 MW or more of electricity are required to sign long-term contracts guaranteeing minimum payments, providing protection if that customer later reduces its electricity use or closes a facility.  Large data center customers are responsible for paying upfront for all direct costs associated with serving their facilities.

Evergy has an obligation to serve any customer looking to locate in our service area, including data centers. However, it is imperative that data centers choosing to locate in Missouri pay their fair share of the grid and that they do not compromise service reliability.

“Our large customer rate structure allows the revenue from data centers to put downward pressure on rates for all other customers while providing important protections against shifting the costs of serving those data centers to our existing customers,” Campbell said.

Evergy proposes sharing earnings with customers
As part of its rate request, Evergy also proposed an earnings-sharing mechanism that would return a portion of earnings to customers if the company’s profit exceeds its allowed return. If that threshold is reached, 65% of earnings above that threshold would be returned to customers.

Resources are available to help customers manage bills
Evergy offers several programs and tools to help customers manage their electricity bills and connect eligible customers with financial assistance. The Average Payment Plan helps reduce  seasonal bill fluctuations by averaging energy use over the previous 12 months. Customers who have fallen behind may also qualify for additional payment arrangement options. Customers can review options and enroll online at www.evergy.com.

In 2025, Evergy helped customers access nearly $25 million in bill assistance. Missouri programs include the Evergy Economic Relief Program, LIHEAP, Adjustable Due Date Program and Critical Medical Needs Program. Customers can also find assistance through United Way 2-2-2 and receive in-person assistance at Evergy Connect, the company’s walk-in location located at 1710 Paseo Blvd. in Kansas City, Mo. Evergy Connect representatives provide virtual and in-person service Monday through Friday with specialists who can help customers with their billing and payment needs. Connect also hosts in-person Resource Tuesday events where customers can meet with organizations that address food insecurity, housing and employment needs.

Missouri Public Service Commission will review and determine final rates
As a regulated utility in Missouri, Evergy is required to file a rate review to update rates at least once every four years. Under the regulatory model, Evergy can submit documentation and ask to recover investments that have already been made to provide service to customers and can ask to recover costs related to service. The filing begins an 11-month review by the Missouri Public Service Commission. Regulators, consumer advocates and other parties will review Evergy’s request and may propose changes or make counter proposals. Customers also will have opportunities to submit written comments or testify at public hearings in 2027.

The process concludes with a Commission order establishing new rates based on the record developed during the proceeding. Filing documents are available through the Missouri Public Service Commission’s website.
