Kansas reopens energy assistance fund
Federal fund helps low income families pay energy costs

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 5, 2020) – Kansas is accepting applications for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) during the coming weeks to address COVID-19 needs. Low income families can submit applications until 5 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2020.

Kansas energy customers can apply for LIEAP program funds on the Kansas Department for Children and Families Energy Assistance website. Applicants will need utility account numbers, proof of income and Social Security numbers for all members of their household.

“We have customers in need of help right now and are pleased funds may be available to them with reopening the LIEAP applications window,” said Lori Shaffer, senior manager, customer & community affairs. “When we are connecting with our customers to provide helpful resources and services, sharing information about LIEAP and assisting with applications is a meaningful way to help, especially now when times are challenging for so many.”

In response to the challenging times, in March Evergy suspended disconnects of electric service for non-payment and began waiving late fees for residential and small business customers. Customers who were previously disconnected may reestablish service by paying one-twelfth of their balance due to set up a payment arrangement. These special coronavirus policies have been extended through June 1. Evergy customer service representatives are available for Evergy Kanas Central customers at 1-800-383-1183 and Evergy Metro customers at 1-800-471-5275. Evergy’s COVID-19-related updates can be found at Evergy.com/COVID19.
